# Plain Language Summary: IHS Provider Integrity Act

This bill is designed to improve oversight of doctors and healthcare providers who work for the Indian Health Service (IHS), which provides medical care to Native Americans. Right now, when the IHS investigates a doctor or healthcare provider for misconduct, there's no requirement to tell the state medical board about it. This bill changes that by requiring the IHS to notify state medical boards within 14 days whenever they start investigating a healthcare provider's professional conduct, and to share any investigation records within 14 days of creating them.

The bill also requires the IHS to do more thorough background checks when hiring new healthcare providers. Before hiring someone, the IHS must now ask state medical boards for information about any violations of that person's medical license over the past 20 years and whether they've ever settled any disciplinary cases related to their medical practice. Additionally, if an IHS healthcare provider violates their medical license requirements, the IHS must automatically share detailed information about that violation with every state where that provider is licensed, without waiting for the state to ask for it.

Finally, the bill requires the IHS to report back to Congress within six months about whether it's actually following its own policies for reviewing healthcare providers when they leave, transfer to another facility, retire, or get fired. The goal is to make sure the IHS catches problems with healthcare providers and shares that information with state regulators so patients—both in the IHS system and elsewhere—are protected from providers with a history of misconduct.
