# What This Bill Actually Does

This bill is about making sure regular Americans get a say in how the federal government uses artificial intelligence. Right now, government agencies are increasingly using AI to make decisions—from processing benefits applications to analyzing data for law enforcement—but most people don't know it's happening or have any input on it. This bill tries to fix that by requiring the Secretary of Homeland Security to organize listening sessions where everyday people and community groups can share their concerns and ideas about how the government should use AI.

The listening sessions would happen both online and in person across different parts of the country, and they'd specifically invite input from a wide range of people: state and local officials, Native American tribes, civil rights groups, immigrant communities, religious organizations, farmers, labor unions, environmental groups, and universities. The idea is to hear from people who might be affected by government AI systems or who have expertise to offer. The bill also encourages these groups to hold their own discussions and report back what they learned.

After gathering all this feedback, the Secretary of Homeland Security would have to write a report to Congress within 240 days describing what Americans think about government use of AI, and then do this annually going forward. Essentially, this bill creates a structured way for citizens to have a voice in an important government decision that could affect how they interact with federal agencies, rather than having these choices made behind closed doors by bureaucrats and tech experts alone.
