Specifically, the bill caps the number of patents a brand-name biologic manufacturer can assert in lawsuits against generic competitors at 20 total patents, with only 10 of those being newer patents filed after a certain date. The idea is that companies can't just pile on endless patents to block competition. However, there are some exceptions: courts can allow more patents in certain situations, like if the generic company hasn't provided enough information about their product, or if there's been a significant change to the drug itself. Patents covering new uses or treatments of the drug are also excluded from these limits, so companies can still protect genuinely new medical applications.
