# Mental Health Care Provider Retention Act of 2024

When military members leave active duty and transition to veteran status, they typically switch from getting mental health care through the Department of Defense to the Veterans Affairs system. This bill addresses a real problem that happens during that transition: people often have to start over with a new therapist or psychiatrist, even if they've built a good relationship with their current mental health provider.

The bill allows service members who are transitioning to veteran status to keep seeing their Department of Defense mental health provider during the switch-over period, rather than being forced to find someone new immediately. This means if you've been working with a therapist at a military hospital and you're about to become a veteran, you can choose to continue with that same provider while you're getting set up in the VA system. You'd get the same appointment priority as active duty members at that military facility, so you wouldn't be deprioritized just because you're transitioning out. The VA would pay the Department of Defense for these services, so there's no cost shifting between agencies.

The bill includes practical provisions for when situations change. If your mental health provider leaves the military facility, you can either see a different provider at that same facility or switch to a VA provider. If you move and can't reasonably travel to your military provider anymore, you'd transition to the VA system. Throughout this process, your medical records would be transferred to the VA so your new provider has your full history. Essentially, this bill tries to reduce disruption in mental health care during a vulnerable transition period, recognizing that continuity with a trusted provider can be important for people managing mental health conditions.
