# The ACE Veterans Act: What It Does

The ACE Veterans Act makes a straightforward change to healthcare benefits for veterans: it allows female veterans enrolled in the VA healthcare system to get a full year's supply of hormonal birth control at once, instead of having to refill their prescription every month or every few months. This applies to birth control pills, patches, vaginal rings, and other similar hormonal contraceptive products that the VA currently provides.

Right now, many veterans have to visit their VA pharmacy or request refills multiple times per year for their contraception, which can be inconvenient and sometimes means running out if they miss a refill deadline. Under this bill, a veteran could simply ask her doctor to write the prescription for a full year's worth, and the VA would fill it all at once. This is similar to how many insurance plans already handle birth control—allowing patients to get larger supplies to reduce the hassle of frequent refills.

The bill also requires that veterans be told about this option when they get their prescription. So instead of veterans having to know to ask for a year's supply, the VA would proactively let them know it's available. This is a practical convenience measure that removes a barrier to consistent access to contraception for women who serve or have served in the military. The change doesn't create new benefits or add new types of birth control to what the VA covers—it just makes it easier to access the contraception that's already available to eligible veterans.
