# What the LET'S Protect Workers Act Actually Does

This bill significantly increases financial penalties that the government can impose on employers who break labor and workplace safety laws. Think of it as making the fines much steeper for companies that violate worker protections—the idea being that bigger penalties will discourage bad behavior and make employers take these laws more seriously.

Right now, many labor law violations carry relatively small fines that some large companies might view as just a cost of doing business. For example, current penalties for wage and hour violations max out around $1,100 per violation. This bill would raise that to $25,000 per violation, or $50,000 if the violation is repeated or willful. For child labor violations, penalties would jump from current levels to between $1,500 and $150,000 per affected child, with even higher penalties ($7,000 to $700,000) if a child is seriously injured or killed. Workplace safety violations would see similar dramatic increases—penalties for serious violations would go from $5,000 to $60,000, and maximum penalties would rise from $70,000 to $800,000.

The bill also targets specific worker protections that are frequently violated. It creates new penalties for employers who fail to provide required family and medical leave, increases penalties for retaliation against workers who report safety problems or try to organize unions, and strengthens enforcement against companies that don't properly maintain safety records. For union-related violations, the bill allows penalties up to $50,000 per violation, or $100,000 if the violation involves firing someone or causing serious economic harm. Additionally, the bill requires mine operators to actually pay their safety penalties or face having their mines shut down—closing a loophole where some companies simply didn't pay fines.

For workers, this could mean real change. Higher penalties make it more expensive for employers to cut corners on safety, skip overtime pay, or retaliate against workers who speak up. For employers, especially large corporations, these penalties represent a significant financial consequence that could actually influence business decisions about compliance. Small businesses might face challenges with the higher penalties, though the bill does allow for payment plans based on demonstrated inability to pay. The changes take effect January 1, 2025, applying to violations that occur after that date.
