This helps prevent accidental overdoses and addiction problems that can happen when people take too many controlled substances without realizing it.

To make this work, the bill requires the VA Secretary to create guidance on best practices for checking these monitoring programs and to train all VA pharmacy staff annually on how to use them properly. The VA has one year from when this bill becomes law to get everything in place. The bill also clarifies that VA doctors and other licensed health care providers who work for the VA can access these state databases, and it allows the VA to share veteran information with state monitoring programs when appropriate. Overall, this is a safety measure aimed at preventing prescription drug misuse among veterans while they're receiving care through the VA system.
