# What the National Fab Lab Network Act Actually Does

This bill creates a nonprofit organization called the National Fab Lab Network that would establish and coordinate a nationwide system of "fab labs"—community workshops equipped with advanced manufacturing tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, and computer-controlled machines. Think of them as public makerspaces where anyone can go to design and create physical objects, from furniture to electronics to custom products. The bill aims to put at least one of these facilities in every Congressional District, with special focus on underserved communities that currently lack access to this kind of technology.

The practical goal is to democratize manufacturing the way the internet democratized information. Instead of needing a factory to make something, ordinary people would be able to walk into a local fab lab, use the equipment to turn their ideas into reality, and potentially start businesses around their creations. The bill emphasizes that these labs should support education (especially in science, technology, engineering, and math), help people develop job skills, enable entrepreneurship, and give communities tools for solving local problems. A student could learn engineering by building a prototype, someone could launch a small business making custom products, or a community could manufacture solutions to local needs.

The organization would be governed by a board of 7 to 15 members representing different regions, tribal communities, schools, libraries, nonprofits, and businesses.
