# What This Bill Does

Right now, poultry processing facilities have to choose: they can either process chickens and turkeys for regular sale to stores and restaurants, or they can do custom processing where farmers bring in their own birds to be processed just for that farmer's household use. They can't do both at the same location. This bill changes that rule and allows facilities to do both types of processing in the same building, as long as they keep everything properly separated and labeled.

# Why This Matters

For small farmers and local food producers, this is a practical solution to a real problem. Currently, if a farmer wants to sell some poultry products to customers while also offering custom processing services to neighbors, they'd need two separate facilities—which is expensive and often impossible for small operations. This bill removes that barrier. A small poultry processor could now handle both a farmer's personal birds (for household use only) and also process birds destined for sale at farmers markets or local restaurants, all under one roof.

# How It Works

The catch is that everything has to stay completely separate. Custom-processed birds and products must be physically kept away from the ones being prepared for sale. Everything processed for personal use has to be clearly marked "Not for Sale" right after processing and stay marked until it goes to the customer. The facility also has to maintain sanitary conditions and follow whatever additional rules the Department of Agriculture creates to keep the two operations from mixing up. Essentially, the government is saying yes to dual operations, but only if facilities prove they can keep the custom and commercial sides completely distinct and properly managed.
