The protection applies specifically to student loans you took out before military service—both federal loans (like Stafford loans) and private education loans. So if you borrowed $30,000 for college at a 7 percent interest rate, then joined the military and consolidated those loans into a new loan that would normally charge 8 percent, this bill says you'd only pay 6 percent instead while you're on active duty.
