# What the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Information Act Does

This bill requires the federal government to start tracking and publicly sharing detailed information about sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production and imports in the United States. Right now, this data isn't systematically collected or made available to the public, so nobody really knows how much SAF is being made, where it's coming from, or what materials are being used to produce it. The bill fixes that by telling the Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration to include SAF data in their regular reports on petroleum and fuel supplies.

Specifically, the government will need to track what raw materials (called "feedstock") are being used to make SAF, where those materials come from, and how much fuel is actually being produced in each state and across the country. They'll also track how much SAF is being imported from other countries. This information will be broken down by state and by country so people can see the full picture of where sustainable aviation fuel is coming from. The data collection has to use reliable statistical methods to make sure the numbers are accurate and that the same fuel isn't counted twice.

The bill defines sustainable aviation fuel as fuel made from renewable materials like used cooking oil, agricultural waste, or other biomass—but not from palm oil or petroleum. To qualify as "sustainable," the fuel also has to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 percent compared to regular jet fuel. This transparency is meant to help policymakers, researchers, and the public understand how the sustainable aviation fuel industry is developing and whether it's actually growing as intended. Airlines are increasingly required to use some SAF to reduce their environmental impact, so knowing where it comes from and how much is available matters for both climate goals and the aviation industry's future.
