The transition would happen over six months to avoid any gaps in investigations.

The reasoning behind the change is that Treasury already specializes in financial matters and has deep expertise in how the nation's payment systems work, so they're better positioned to handle financial crimes. Meanwhile, the Secret Service could concentrate all its resources on what supporters argue is its most important job—protecting national leaders. The bill essentially says these two missions don't need to be under the same roof and would work better if separated, with each agency focusing on what it does best.
