# Understanding the Alpha-gal Allergen Inclusion Act

This bill adds a specific allergen called alpha-gal to the list of major food allergens that food manufacturers must label on their products. Alpha-gal is a sugar molecule found in red meat and certain other animal products. Some people develop an allergy to alpha-gal, usually after being bitten by a tick, and eating foods containing it can trigger serious allergic reactions ranging from hives and swelling to anaphylaxis. Right now, food companies aren't required to warn consumers about alpha-gal on labels the way they do for peanuts, shellfish, or milk, even though it can be just as dangerous for people with this allergy.

The bill specifically requires labeling for alpha-gal found in ingredients from certain primates and from red algae in a specific order (Gigartinales). The red algae requirement is important because some food additives and supplements derived from these algae can contain alpha-gal. However, the bill includes an exception: if a food ingredient comes from genetically modified animals that have been engineered to not produce alpha-gal, it wouldn't need to be labeled. This gives manufacturers an option to use modified ingredients without triggering the labeling requirement.

For people with alpha-gal allergies, this change means they'll finally have clear information about which foods to avoid, making it much safer to shop and eat. For food companies, it means they'll need to test their products for alpha-gal and update their labels accordingly. The law takes effect on January 1, 2026, giving manufacturers time to adjust their labeling and testing procedures. This is particularly important as alpha-gal allergies have become increasingly common in recent years, especially in areas where certain tick species are prevalent.
