# Colorado Wilderness Act of 2024: What It Actually Does

This bill protects a large swath of Colorado public lands by designating them as official wilderness areas. In simple terms, the federal government is saying "these lands will stay wild and undeveloped." The bill adds roughly 650,000 acres across Colorado to the National Wilderness Preservation System—that's an area larger than the state of Delaware. These lands are spread across the western and central parts of the state and include places like Bull Gulch, Castle Peak, Redcloud Peak, and the Dolores River Canyon.

Once an area becomes official wilderness, it's managed under strict rules. You can still hike, camp, fish, and hunt there, but motorized vehicles, mountain bikes, and commercial development are prohibited. Existing water rights and grazing operations get to continue as they have been, so ranchers who currently graze livestock in these areas can keep doing so. The bill also allows the Colorado Army National Guard to continue conducting helicopter training exercises over the wilderness areas, so military operations aren't restricted. If you're someone who loves backcountry hiking and wants to experience undeveloped land, these areas will remain that way. If you work in industries like oil and gas or mining, these lands are now off-limits for new development.

The bill includes special protections for water. It requires the federal government to secure water rights to keep streams flowing naturally through these wilderness areas to support fish, wildlife, and plants. However, it carefully protects existing water uses—farmers, cities, and other water users who have established rights won't lose them. The government can maintain existing water infrastructure like pipes and dams that were already there before this law passed. Two areas—Deep Creek and Pisgah Mountain—are designated as "potential wilderness" and will become official wilderness once certain industrial uses currently permitted there are phased out, giving existing operators time to wind down operations.
