# Foreign Adversary Investment Prohibition Act

This bill prevents members of Congress from making financial investments or transactions that benefit certain countries the U.S. considers hostile adversaries. Specifically, it targets China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and Venezuela under Nicolás Maduro's government. The ban applies to any financial dealings that would directly or indirectly benefit these countries or companies they own or control.

The types of transactions covered are quite broad. They include gifts, loans, or deposits of money; buying stocks, bonds, or other securities; investing in commodities like oil or metals; and even more complex financial arrangements like derivatives or options that essentially give someone an economic interest in these countries' assets. The goal is to prevent members of Congress from profiting from or financially supporting these adversarial nations while they're serving in office.

If a member of Congress violates this rule, the Attorney General can sue them in federal court. The penalties start at $5,000 for a first violation, increase to $10,000 for a second violation, and go up to $15,000 for any violations after that. These are civil penalties, meaning they're financial fines rather than criminal charges. The court would need to prove by a preponderance of the evidence—basically, more likely than not—that the violation actually occurred before imposing any penalty.

For most Americans, this bill doesn't directly affect everyday life since it only applies to members of Congress. However, it reflects a broader policy concern about preventing U.S. government officials from having financial ties to countries considered national security threats, which supporters argue helps ensure their decision-making isn't influenced by personal financial interests in those nations.
