This bill makes several changes to how election mail—including ballots, voter registration forms, and ballot applications—gets handled by the U.S. Postal Service. The core idea is to make sure mail-in ballots move through the postal system faster and more reliably, especially during federal elections.

**Faster Processing and Better Tracking of Your Ballot**

The bill requires the Postal Service to process and clear ballots from mail facilities on the same day they arrive, rather than letting them sit in sorting facilities. It also requires ballots to be marked with a postmark or other indicator showing when they were mailed, so election officials can verify the ballot was sent on time. Additionally, states must use special barcodes on ballot envelopes (called intelligent mail barcodes) so voters can track their ballots through the mail, similar to how you can track a package. Election officials also have to label ballot shipments with special tags and logos so postal workers know these are official election materials that need priority handling.

**Free Postage and Extended Deadlines**

Completed ballots will be mailed back to election officials for free—voters won't need to pay postage. The bill also extends the deadline for accepting mailed ballots. States must accept and count any ballot that was postmarked on or before Election Day, as long as it arrives within seven days after the election. This gives mail-in ballots more time to reach election officials without being rejected for being late.

**Protecting Election Mail During Election Season**

For the 120 days leading up to a federal election, the Postal Service cannot make operational changes that would slow down mail delivery—like removing mailboxes without replacing them or shutting down mail sorting machines. The bill also requires the Postal Service to appoint an Election Mail Coordinator in each regional office to work directly with election officials. Finally, the bill requires the Postal Service to consult annually with Native American tribes about voting access issues on tribal lands.
