# What This Bill Actually Does

This bill blocks the federal government from using taxpayer money to force landowners to sell their property for electric power lines. Right now, federal agencies can use "eminent domain"—a legal power that lets the government take private land for public projects—to build or upgrade electrical transmission lines across the country. The bill also gives states more power over where transmission lines can go. Currently, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) can approve transmission projects even if a state objects. Under this bill, if a state formally objects to a transmission project, FERC cannot approve it. This means states get a veto over major power line projects within their borders, shifting control away from federal regulators and back to state governments.
