This bill would change that status by declaring them a federally recognized tribe, putting them on equal legal footing with other federally recognized tribes across the country.

Once recognized, the tribe and its roughly 300 members become eligible for federal services and benefits that the government provides to Native American tribes. This includes healthcare through Indian Health Services, education programs, housing assistance, economic development funding, and other support programs. The tribe can also request that land they own in Southampton County, Virginia be taken into federal trust, which gives the land special legal status and protections. The bill requires the federal government to work with the tribe within 120 days to figure out exactly which areas will be served by these federal programs.

The bill includes some important restrictions. Most notably, the tribe is explicitly prohibited from operating casinos or gambling operations, even though many federally recognized tribes have this right. The bill also doesn't change any existing hunting, fishing, or water rights for tribe members—it simply maintains the status quo on those issues. The tribe's current governing structure and membership rolls would be recognized as valid under federal law, meaning they don't have to reorganize or re-enroll their members.
