The GRID Power Act changes how power plants get connected to the electrical grid. Here's what that means in practical terms: If a region is facing potential power shortages or reliability problems, the power company managing that area's grid can now propose moving certain types of power plants—specifically ones that can quickly turn on or off as needed—to the front of the interconnection queue. These "dispatchable" power plants (like natural gas plants or other sources that can rapidly adjust output) would get faster approval compared to other projects waiting to connect. The bill requires these companies to prove there's actually a need for the prioritization and explain how it will help the grid, and they have to let the public weigh in before submitting their proposal to federal regulators.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which oversees the nation's power grid, has 90 days to start writing new rules to make this happen and 180 days to finalize them. The Commission then has 60 days to approve or reject any prioritization proposals from power companies. The goal is to speed up the process of getting reliable power sources connected to the grid when there's a demonstrated need, while still maintaining public input and oversight. Every five years, the Commission will review whether these new rules are working as intended.
