# Plain Language Summary: No Shame at School Act of 2024

This bill addresses what happens when families can't pay for school meals. Right now, schools can treat students differently if their family owes money for lunches or breakfasts—sometimes using special tokens, announcing names, or even taking away food that's already been served. This bill would make that illegal. Schools would no longer be allowed to publicly identify, physically separate, or stigmatize kids because their family has unpaid meal debt. They also couldn't use debt collectors to chase families for the money or punish kids by withholding grades, extracurricular activities, or other school programs.

The bill also requires schools to automatically sign up more students for free or reduced-price meals. Currently, schools can choose whether to do this. Under this bill, they would have to actively work to get eligible kids enrolled—either by directly certifying them based on existing information or by sending applications and encouraging families to apply. If a student becomes eligible for free meals partway through the school year, schools would have to go back and fix their meal claims to reimburse the school for meals that should have been free from the start of the year.

The practical effect is that kids from families struggling financially would get meals without embarrassment or shame, and schools would have to make a real effort to ensure eligible students actually get the benefits they're entitled to. Schools could still contact parents about unpaid fees, but only through sealed letters and not in ways that single out or embarrass the child. The bill essentially treats unpaid meal debt as a family financial issue rather than something that should affect a child's school experience.
