# Valley Fever Vaccine Bill: What It Actually Does

Valley fever, also called coccidioidomycosis, is a fungal infection that spreads through dust and soil, primarily affecting people in the Southwest. Right now, there's no vaccine to prevent it. This bill is designed to change that by creating a coordinated federal effort to develop, test, and manufacture a valley fever vaccine by 2034.

Here's what the government will actually do under this bill: The Department of Health and Human Services will appoint a single coordinator to oversee the entire vaccine project and make sure different federal agencies aren't duplicating work. That coordinator will develop a detailed national strategy within a year, laying out exactly how to get a vaccine developed and approved. The government will also hand out grants and contracts—between $500,000 and $2.5 million per grant—to companies and research institutions already working on valley fever vaccines, with priority going to those who have already started human testing. For manufacturing, the government will provide even larger grants, up to $5 million each, to help companies build the facilities needed to produce the vaccine at scale.

The bill also creates a National Valley Fever Registry to collect data on how many people actually have valley fever and how much it costs the healthcare system. This registry will be overseen by an advisory committee made up of federal experts, doctors, patients, and patient advocates who will decide what information to collect and how to use it for research. The government is authorizing about $50 million total for vaccine development and manufacturing work between 2025 and 2030, plus $1 million to develop the national strategy. While this bill doesn't guarantee a vaccine will be ready by 2034, it removes bureaucratic obstacles and provides real funding to make vaccine development a coordinated national priority rather than scattered individual efforts.
