Supporters argue this protects civil rights because facial recognition technology has been shown to misidentify women, young people, people of color, and people with disabilities at higher rates than others, creating risks of wrongful arrests. They also worry that turning body cameras into surveillance tools could discourage crime victims and witnesses from cooperating with police, especially in communities that already have tense relationships with law enforcement.
