Sjögren's is an autoimmune disease where your body's immune system attacks the glands that produce moisture, leaving people with severe dryness in their eyes and mouth, along with exhaustion and chronic pain. The resolution notes that up to 4 million Americans have it, though many don't realize it because it's hard to diagnose and often gets confused with other conditions. It affects women about nine times more often than men, and while it typically shows up between ages 45 and 55, it can happen at any age. People with Sjögren's often see multiple doctors—rheumatologists, eye specialists, dentists, neurologists, and others—making treatment complicated and expensive.

The resolution encourages the Department of Health and Human Services to do several things: invest in research to better understand what causes Sjögren's and develop better treatments, figure out how many people actually have it (since many cases go undiagnosed), educate doctors and the public about the disease, and make sure people in underserved communities get proper diagnosis and care. By officially recognizing April as awareness month, Congress is essentially asking for more attention and resources directed toward this overlooked disease so that people suffering from it can get diagnosed faster and have better treatment options.
