This resolution acknowledges a painful history: women in America—particularly Black women, Indigenous women, immigrant women, LGBTQ+ women, disabled women, and low-income women—have been systematically dismissed and disrespected in healthcare. The resolution points to real historical wrongs, including the fact that gynecology as a field was partly built on exploiting and sterilizing women without their consent, and that contraceptive pills were tested on women in Puerto Rico without proper agreement. Today, women still struggle with doctors dismissing their pain, leading to missed diagnoses and unnecessary suffering. The resolution also highlights how laws have historically required women to get permission from spouses or the government to make decisions about their own bodies—whether about contraception, sterilization, or abortion. Recent restrictions on reproductive rights have made these problems worse, creating dangerous medical situations. The House is committing to change this by centering women's voices in their own healthcare, ensuring doctors listen to patients and involve them in decisions, investing more money in research about women's health conditions, and holding healthcare institutions accountable when they show bias or cause harm.
