This is a resolution honoring the Grandassa Models, a groundbreaking group of African-American women who emerged in Harlem in 1962 and became icons of the 'Black is Beautiful' movement during the civil rights era. The Grandassa Models challenged Eurocentric beauty standards by celebrating natural Black hair, African-inspired fashion, and authentic self-expression at a time when doing so was considered radical. Founded through the African Jazz-Art Society & Studios (AJASS) and led by Elombe Brath and Kwame Brathwaite, the group included women like Clara Lewis, Rose Nelms, and others who transformed fashion into activism and used their platform to promote cultural pride and African heritage. Their influence extended far beyond modeling—they became educators, artists, and community leaders who inspired generations to embrace their cultural identity. The resolution recognizes how the Grandassa Models' legacy continues to shape how Black beauty is celebrated globally today, from natural hair movements to cultural renaissance efforts, and acknowledges the ongoing work of the Grandassa Association in preserving this legacy and uplifting communities in New York City and beyond.
