This is a symbolic resolution that designates September 2024 as "National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month." Ovarian cancer is the deadliest gynecologic cancer for women in the United States, with about one in 87 women facing a lifetime risk of diagnosis. The real challenge with this disease is that unlike breast cancer (which mammograms can detect) or cervical cancer (which Pap smears can catch), there's no reliable early detection test for ovarian cancer. This means about 80 percent of cases are found at advanced stages when treatment is harder and survival rates are lower. When caught early, the five-year survival rate jumps to over 90 percent, but overall it's only about 51 percent.

The resolution also emphasizes that certain groups face worse outcomes. Black women with ovarian cancer have significantly higher mortality rates than white women, and women of color, low-income women, and those in rural areas often struggle to access quality treatment. The bill calls for better awareness of ovarian cancer symptoms—which are often vague and easy to miss, including bloating, pelvic pain, and difficulty eating—so women and doctors can catch the disease sooner. It also encourages genetic testing for women with family histories of ovarian or breast cancer, since about 20 percent of ovarian cancer cases have a hereditary link.

While this resolution won't directly change anyone's life, its purpose is to support awareness campaigns and research efforts that might help more women recognize symptoms early and get better care.
