# Understanding the Fred Korematsu Day Resolution

This resolution asks the House of Representatives to officially recognize January 30th as a national "Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution." It's not creating a federal holiday where people get the day off work—instead, it's a symbolic declaration encouraging Americans to reflect on an important but troubling chapter of U.S. history and what it teaches us about protecting our freedoms.

Fred Korematsu was a Japanese-American who refused to comply with Executive Order 9066 during World War II, which forced over 120,000 people of Japanese descent into prison camps. Most of these people were American citizens who had committed no crime. When Korematsu challenged this in court, the Supreme Court ruled against him in 1944, saying the internment was justified as a "military necessity." Decades later, the government admitted it was wrong—an official commission concluded the internment was driven by racial prejudice and fear, not actual security threats. Korematsu's conviction was eventually overturned in 1983.
