# Federal Workforce Freedom Act

This bill makes it easier for the federal government to fire or discipline federal employees and harder for those employees to fight back through the appeals process. Specifically, it reduces the time federal workers have to appeal disciplinary actions from 30 days down to just 7 days, and it limits their ability to request a hearing before an independent arbiter to challenge their termination or discipline.

The bill also changes how federal employees can be classified, making it simpler for agencies to reclassify career civil service positions as "at-will" positions, meaning workers could be fired without cause. This reverses some of the job protections that have existed for decades in the federal workforce. Additionally, the legislation restricts the ability of federal employee unions to represent their members in certain disputes and limits the time unions have to respond to proposed disciplinary actions.

For federal workers, this means less job security and fewer opportunities to challenge what they believe are unfair firings or disciplinary decisions. For the general public, supporters argue this gives agencies more flexibility to remove underperforming employees quickly, while critics worry it could lead to more arbitrary firings and potentially harm government services by making federal jobs less stable and attractive. The practical effect would be felt most by the roughly 2 million federal employees across agencies like the Social Security Administration, Veterans Affairs, the IRS, and other government departments.
