# Social Security Check Tax Cut Act

This bill would prevent the federal government from taxing Social Security benefits for most people who receive them. Right now, depending on how much other income you have, the government can tax up to 85% of your Social Security payments as regular income. This bill would change that by making Social Security benefits tax-free for the vast majority of recipients.

Here's who this affects: If you're retired and collecting Social Security, you currently have to include some or all of those benefits as taxable income when you file your taxes—but only if you have other income above certain thresholds. For example, if you're single and have more than $25,000 in combined income (including half your Social Security benefits), you'd owe taxes on up to 50% of your benefits. If your combined income exceeds $34,000, you could owe taxes on up to 85% of your benefits. This bill would eliminate that tax burden entirely for Social Security recipients.

The practical impact would be straightforward: seniors and disabled people receiving Social Security would keep more of their monthly checks. Someone currently paying taxes on their benefits would see their tax bill go down or disappear completely. This would be especially helpful for people with modest retirement savings or part-time work income, since they often end up in that taxable income range. However, this change would reduce federal tax revenue, which means less money coming into the government unless spending is cut or other taxes are raised elsewhere.
