The bill creates three main initiatives: First, NIST and the State Department must brief Congress within a year on where U.S. participation in standards development could be strengthened, including recommendations on hosting more standards meetings in America. Second, they'll create a public website that lists ongoing international standards efforts and explains how American companies and agencies can get involved. Third, the bill establishes a five-year pilot program that provides grants to help pay for hosting international standards meetings in the United States—covering up to 50% of meeting costs. The idea is straightforward: if standards meetings happen in America, it's easier for U.S. companies and government officials to participate, which means American interests get better represented in the rules that will govern AI and other critical technologies globally.
