For example, if a cataract surgery costs $3,000 at a hospital but only $1,500 at an outpatient surgery center, Medicare would pay the lower rate in both places. This could lower your out-of-pocket costs if you're on Medicare, since copays and deductibles are often based on what Medicare pays. However, this approach could create challenges.
