The SERVE Act makes it easier for military members to return to college after serving in the armed forces. Right now, colleges are only required to readmit student-soldiers if they've been on active duty for more than 30 days. This bill removes that 30-day waiting period, so even students who serve for just a few days or weeks can come back to school at the same place they left off academically. For example, if a student takes a two-week military assignment, they can now return to their college and pick up where they were—whether that's as a sophomore or junior—without having to reapply or lose their academic standing. This helps military members balance their service obligations with their education goals, making it less risky to answer the call to duty when you're in the middle of your studies.

Servicemember Enrollment and Readmission for Valuable Education Act or the SERVE Act This bill revises the definition of service in the uniformed services as the term relates to readmission requirements for servicemembers. Current law requires institutions of higher education (IHEs) to readmit students who take a leave of absence to perform active military service at the same academic status they had attained prior to such service. This readmission requirement currently applies to servicemembers who perform service in the uniformed services for a period of more than 30 days under a call or order to active duty of more than 30 days. This bill removes the 30-day requirement, thereby allowing a student who is serving for less than 30 days to be readmitted to their IHE.
