The For Sale Act of 2025 requires the federal government to sell six major office buildings in Washington, DC. These buildings currently house various federal agencies like the Department of Agriculture, Department of Labor, and Department of Energy. Within 18 months of the law passing, all federal employees working in these buildings must move to other federal buildings. Then, within 2 years after that move, the General Services Administration (the agency that manages federal property) must sell all six buildings to the highest bidder at fair market value.

The bill includes a few important restrictions. Foreign individuals or companies cannot buy any of these buildings—they can only be sold to American buyers. The money made from selling these buildings will first be used to cover the costs of moving federal employees and implementing the sales. Any leftover money goes to the U.S. Treasury to help reduce the federal deficit.

The law also prevents the government from buying or leasing replacement office space as part of this consolidation effort. Additionally, the bill exempts these sales from several environmental and historic preservation laws that would normally apply to federal property sales, allowing the process to move forward more quickly without those typical reviews and protections.
