The bill also requires each DHS component to improve their mental health programs by offering multiple ways for officers to seek help anonymously, reducing stigma around mental health, and protecting officers from punishment or automatic medical reviews just for seeking counseling.

A major protection in the bill ensures that officers won't face negative consequences at work simply for getting mental health help, though the bill still allows evaluations if there are legitimate concerns about an officer's ability to do their job safely. The program will regularly survey officers to see if these mental health efforts are actually working and will report findings to Congress annually.
