Here's what the bill does: Members of Congress and their designated staff can notify government agencies that they want their home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, social security numbers, children's information, school locations, and other identifying details marked as private. Government agencies then have 72 hours to remove this information from any publicly available records. The same protection applies to data brokers—companies that collect and sell personal information. These companies would be completely banned from selling the personal information of anyone in the United States, and they cannot publicly post such information online if someone requests they don't.

The bill includes important exceptions to protect free speech and journalism. News organizations can still report on matters of public concern, and the law doesn't prevent legitimate law enforcement investigations or information sharing required by federal law. People can also still voluntarily share their own information online, and the law doesn't restrict access to public statements made by members of Congress in their official duties. If someone violates these rules, the affected individual can sue for damages in court, and state attorneys general can also enforce the law.
