This bill would send a one-time $200 monthly payment to millions of Americans who receive certain government benefits. The payments would go to people receiving Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), railroad retirement benefits, veterans disability or pension payments, and federal civil service retirement benefits. The payments would be distributed for six months, from January through June 2026, meaning eligible recipients could receive up to $1,200 total if they qualify throughout the entire period. However, each person would only get one $200 payment per month, even if they receive multiple types of benefits.

The bill is designed to help these groups cope with inflation and rising costs of living. To receive the payments, recipients must live in one of the 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, or the Northern Mariana Islands. Importantly, these payments would not count as income for tax purposes and would not affect eligibility for other federal assistance programs like food stamps or housing assistance. The payments would be delivered through the same method and account each person already uses to receive their regular benefits, making the process automatic for most recipients. The bill sets aside approximately $102 million for administrative costs to process and distribute these payments.
