Specifically, every state's Medicaid program must cover at least one version of each opioid addiction medication without requiring prior authorization or dosage restrictions. When possible, this includes long-lasting injectable options that patients only need once a month. The goal is simple: if a doctor prescribes addiction medication, patients should be able to get it without delays or insurance company interference. States still have some flexibility to manage their drug lists, but they can't use that flexibility to block access to these critical medications.

The law gives states about a year to make these changes and allows extra time for states that need to pass new legislation to comply. The bill also requires a government report within a year examining how different states currently restrict these medications and what other Medicaid policies might be preventing people from getting the addiction treatment they need. This is aimed at removing the red tape that can delay or prevent people from accessing life-saving addiction treatment.
