The PEAKS Act protects rural hospitals that serve remote, hard-to-reach areas. Specifically, it helps hospitals in mountainous regions or areas with only back roads stay designated as "critical access hospitals," which is a special status that brings them extra federal funding and support. These hospitals often struggle because they're far from other medical facilities, but that distance is actually part of what qualifies them for this critical access status.

The law addresses two main problems. First, if a new hospital or medical facility opens within 10 to 15 miles of an existing critical access hospital, the older hospital would normally lose its special status because it's no longer far enough away from other care. This bill says that won't happen—hospitals that already had this designation and met the distance requirement before will keep it, even if new facilities open nearby. Second, the law makes it easier for ambulance services run by these critical access hospitals to get paid by Medicare. Starting in 2025, ambulances serving mountainous or remote areas with only secondary roads can travel up to 15 miles and still get full reimbursement, instead of the usual 35-mile requirement. This helps ensure that rural communities maintain access to emergency ambulance services even when hospitals and emergency services are spread far apart.
