# What This Bill Actually Does

This bill creates federal protections for three animals—bison, grizzly bears, and wolves—that were once hunted nearly to extinction across America. Right now, these species have limited legal protection, and states often allow hunting or removal of them. This bill would make it illegal for anyone to hunt, kill, capture, or sell these animals anywhere in the country, with only a few specific exceptions.

The main idea is that these three species are important to Native American tribes culturally and spiritually, and they also play crucial roles in keeping ecosystems healthy. The bill recognizes that these animals have been pushed out of most of their historical ranges and need stronger federal protection to survive long-term. It would establish three committees—one for each species—made up of tribal representatives, scientists, and government officials to figure out how to restore these animals to places where they used to live and help them coexist with people.

If someone violates these protections, they could face serious consequences. A first-time violation could result in up to $50,000 in fines and a year in prison. A second violation could mean $75,000 in fines and two years in prison. The bill also includes an interesting provision: if someone is convicted of illegally killing these animals, any grazing permits they hold on federal land would be automatically cancelled. Additionally, the bill allows people to voluntarily donate their grazing permits to the government, which would then permanently end livestock grazing on that land to reduce conflicts between cattle and these wild animals.

There are some exceptions built in. Native American tribes can still hunt and use these animals for religious, cultural, and treaty purposes. People can use non-lethal methods like noise makers or fencing to protect their livestock or property. And if someone genuinely believes they're in immediate danger, they can take action to protect themselves. The bill also allows the sale of captive-bred bison for food, so it doesn't affect the bison meat industry.
