Right now, if someone with an intellectual or developmental disability gets married, their Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits can be reduced or cut off because the government counts their spouse's income and resources when deciding how much help they get. Once it passes, adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities will keep receiving their full SSI benefits even after they get married—their spouse's income and assets won't be counted against them anymore.

For many people with intellectual or developmental disabilities, getting married currently means losing critical financial support, which can force them to choose between getting married and keeping their benefits. The change would take effect about six months after the bill becomes law. It only applies to adults (age 18 and older) with intellectual or developmental disabilities, and it doesn't change any other SSI rules—just this one rule about how marriage affects benefits for this specific group of people.
