# Ban Conflicted Trading Act

This bill prevents members of Congress from trading stocks based on information they learn while doing their jobs. Right now, members of Congress have access to confidential information about government policies, upcoming legislation, and economic data before the public knows about it. This bill would make it illegal for them to use that insider knowledge to buy or sell stocks in a way that benefits from that information.

The practical effect is straightforward: if a congressperson learns in a closed-door meeting that a new regulation will hurt a particular industry, they couldn't turn around and sell their stock in companies in that industry before the news becomes public. Similarly, if they learn about positive developments for a sector, they can't buy stocks in those companies ahead of time to profit from the price increase that follows. Essentially, it closes what's often called the "congressional insider trading loophole"—a gap that allows lawmakers to trade on information that would get ordinary people prosecuted if they did the same thing.

Ban Conflicted Trading Act This bill prohibits a Member of Congress or certain congressional officers or employees from (1) purchasing or selling specified investments, (2) entering into a transaction that creates a net short position in a security, or (3) serving as an officer or member of any board of any for-profit entity.
