# Understanding the Prescription Drug Monitoring Act of 2021

If someone goes to a doctor in one state and then travels to another state to get the same medication from a different doctor, those two doctors might not know about each other's prescriptions. This bill aims to improve how these state systems share information so doctors and pharmacists can see a more complete picture of a patient's prescription history.

The practical effect is that doctors and pharmacists would have better tools to spot when someone might be "doctor shopping"—visiting multiple providers to get multiple prescriptions for the same drug. This is a common way people obtain excess medications to sell or abuse. By connecting these monitoring systems, healthcare providers can make smarter decisions about whether to fill a prescription, potentially preventing addiction and overdoses. Prescription Drug Monitoring Act of 2021 This bill imposes, as a condition on certain federal funding for the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP), additional notification and reporting requirements concerning prescriptions for potentially addictive drugs. States or territories that receive this funding must require <ul> <li>prescribers to consult the PDMP before starting treatment with such drugs, and</li> <li>dispensers to report within 24 hours to the PDMP each time they fill a prescription for such drugs.</li> </ul> In addition, the state agency administering a PDMP must analyze reported data for patterns of prescription drug misuse or abuse and provide certain information to prescribers, law enforcement, the public, and other states and territories.
