# The Farewell to Foam Act of 2025

This bill bans the use of expanded polystyrene foam—commonly known as Styrofoam—in food and beverage containers across the United States. The law would prohibit manufacturers, restaurants, food vendors, and other businesses from using foam takeout boxes, cups, plates, and similar containers for serving or storing food and drinks. Instead, companies would need to switch to alternative materials like paper, cardboard, compostable plastics, or other eco-friendly options.

The main reason behind this ban is environmental protection. Foam breaks down very slowly in landfills and often ends up in oceans and waterways, where it fragments into tiny pieces that harm marine life and enter the food chain. Because foam is lightweight and doesn't biodegrade, it persists in the environment for hundreds of years. By eliminating foam food containers, the bill aims to reduce plastic pollution and protect ecosystems.

This change would affect restaurants, food delivery services, grocery stores, catering companies, and any business that packages food or beverages. Consumers might notice that their takeout containers look different—perhaps made of paper or plant-based materials instead of the familiar white foam. While these alternatives are often slightly more expensive, many are already widely available and used by environmentally conscious businesses. The transition would likely happen gradually as businesses use up existing foam supplies and switch to new packaging materials for future orders.
