# What the National Human Trafficking Database Act Does

This bill creates a centralized national database to track human trafficking cases across the United States. Right now, information about trafficking is scattered across different state and local agencies with no unified system to see the big picture. This bill would change that by requiring state law enforcement agencies to collect and report trafficking data to the federal Department of Justice, which would then publish it online for public access.

The bill provides federal grants to state law enforcement agencies—specifically state bureaus of investigation—to help them gather this information. States would report details like the number of trafficking arrests and convictions in each county, data from national and state trafficking hotlines, information about survivors who received help, and which anti-trafficking organizations are operating in their area. The database would highlight which counties have the highest and lowest rates of trafficking, making it easier to identify problem areas and direct resources where they're needed most.

For everyday people, this means more transparency about where trafficking is happening in your community. Researchers, nonprofits, and the public would be able to see this data online to better understand the scope of the problem. The bill includes strong privacy protections to keep trafficking survivors' identities confidential and safe. The legislation also specifically states that the federal government cannot use this data to punish states or cut their funding based on how much trafficking they report—the goal is information gathering, not punishment.

The bill authorizes $51 million per year from 2025 through 2028 to fund these state reporting efforts, and requires the Attorney General to report the database contents to Congress annually so lawmakers can track progress in fighting trafficking nationwide.
