# National Guard and Reserve Student Loan Fairness Act

This bill fixes a gap in how the government counts military service toward student loan forgiveness for National Guard and Reserve members. Right now, these part-time soldiers can get their federal student loans forgiven after ten years of public service work, but the current rules don't properly credit the time they spend on military duty. This bill changes that by allowing their military service to count toward loan forgiveness in a fairer way.

Here's the practical problem it solves: Imagine you're a National Guard member who works as a teacher (a public service job) and gets called up for military duty several times a year. Currently, those weeks or months of military service don't count toward your loan forgiveness progress, even though you're serving your country. You might make loan payments during those months, but the government won't credit them toward the ten-year forgiveness program. This bill says that if you serve more than 30 days total in a year (through training, weekend duty, or emergency calls), those days should count. The bill converts your days of service into months of credit—roughly one month of credit for every 20 days served—and allows those months to count as qualifying payments toward forgiveness.

The bill also removes an artificial cap that currently limits Reserve and Guard members to 12 months of credit per year. If you serve extensively during a year, you could now earn more than 12 months of credit, which speeds up your path to loan forgiveness. The only catch is that you still need to make actual loan payments during the year you served, though there's an exception for service beyond the first 12 months of credit in a year. This change primarily benefits National Guard and Reserve members who work in public service jobs like teaching, nursing, or government work while maintaining their military obligations.
