# What the Safer Sports for Athletes Act Actually Does

This bill makes major changes to how the U.S. Center for SafeSport handles abuse complaints in Olympic sports and other national athletic programs. SafeSport is the independent organization that investigates allegations of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse involving coaches, trainers, athletes, and other sports officials. Right now, the process has been criticized as slow, unfair to accused individuals, and sometimes dismissive of survivors. This bill tries to fix those problems.

The most significant change is speeding up investigations. Currently, cases can drag on for months or years with no clear timeline. Under this bill, SafeSport must complete investigations within 180 days, with limited extensions allowed. The organization also has to assign a case manager to each complaint within a week and must notify the relevant sports organization about the allegations quickly so they can protect other athletes during the investigation. For people filing complaints, the bill guarantees they can have a victim advocate present during the process at no cost, and that advocate's conversations stay confidential unless the survivor agrees otherwise.

The bill also adds important protections for people accused of misconduct. Anyone facing suspension or being banned from competition now gets written notice of the allegations, the right to have a lawyer present, a chance to respond during the investigation, and a written explanation if they're found to have violated rules. If SafeSport wants to temporarily suspend someone before a full hearing, that person can now demand a hearing before major competitions like the Olympics. The bill also requires SafeSport to publish its investigation procedures and decision-making rules so everyone knows how the system works.

On the prevention side, the bill requires SafeSport to spend at least 20 percent of its funding on abuse prevention training and oversight, and it mandates that all staff receive trauma-informed training—with investigators getting 20 hours annually. The bill also funds grants to organizations that help protect young athletes and requires SafeSport to report annually to Congress about its work. Finally, it ensures that at least 20 percent of SafeSport's board members are recommended by athlete survivors, giving people with lived experience a real voice in how the organization operates.
