# Mobile Cancer Screening Act: What You Need to Know

This bill creates a federal grant program to fund mobile cancer screening units that travel to rural and underserved communities. The federal government would provide money to hospitals, health centers, and other medical organizations to purchase vehicles equipped with cancer screening technology and send them out to areas where people have limited access to these services. Each organization could receive up to $2 million in federal funding to get these mobile units up and running.

The bill targets communities that struggle most with cancer detection. Right now, only about 4.5 percent of people eligible for lung cancer screening actually get screened, and most cancers aren't caught until later stages when they're harder to treat. Rural areas and communities served by the Indian Health Service would get priority for funding, along with organizations that can quickly connect patients with follow-up care if something abnormal is found. The federal government would cover the cost of the vehicles, imaging equipment, and digital tools needed to run these units, though organizations receiving grants would need to contribute their own money too—at least one dollar for every three dollars the government provides.

The program would run from 2026 through 2030 with $15 million authorized each year. This means if you live in a rural area or an underserved community, a mobile screening unit could come to your town, potentially making it much easier to get screened for cancer without traveling long distances. The bill requires the government to report back to Congress in four years with data on how many people were screened, whether early detection improved, and whether the program actually saved lives—information that will help determine if this approach is worth continuing.
