# Fair Play for Women Act: What You Need to Know

This bill aims to strengthen protections for female athletes in schools and colleges by expanding and enforcing existing civil rights laws. The core issue it addresses is that despite Title IX—a law passed over 50 years ago that banned sex discrimination in school sports—women and girls still face significant inequalities. The bill's main goal is to make sure these protections actually work and that schools follow the rules.

Here's what the bill does in practical terms: It makes it easier for female athletes to sue schools, athletic associations, and colleges if they're treated unfairly because of their sex. This includes discrimination in the number of sports offered, the quality of facilities and equipment, scholarships, travel funding, and other resources. For example, if a school provides boys' teams with better locker rooms, newer equipment, or more funding than girls' teams, an athlete could take legal action. The bill also requires schools to provide detailed information about their athletic programs—including exactly how many scholarships go to men versus women and how much money is spent on each sport—so parents and students can see if there's inequality happening.

The bill also mandates that everyone working in school and college athletics receive annual training about these protections so they understand what's allowed and what isn't. This addresses a real problem: surveys show most coaches, athletic directors, and even parents don't fully understand their rights under Title IX. Additionally, the bill allows courts to award damages not just for lost opportunities but also for emotional distress, humiliation, and pain and suffering, plus attorney's fees—giving athletes real incentive to fight back against discrimination. The bill applies to all schools that receive federal funding, from elementary schools through colleges.
