# The One Flag for All Act: What It Actually Does

This bill would ban the display of any flag other than the American flag on the outside of federal government buildings and in public areas inside those buildings, like entryways and hallways. The rule would apply to federal office buildings, military installations, embassies, consulates, and buildings used by Congress. Essentially, if you walk into a federal building, you wouldn't see state flags, city flags, or other flags displayed in spaces where the public can see them.

However, the bill includes a long list of exceptions that actually allow quite a few flags to still be displayed. Military branch flags, POW/MIA flags, and historical American flags like the Betsy Ross flag would be allowed. State flags can still hang in Members of Congress's personal offices. Flags representing visiting foreign diplomats, federal agencies, Indian tribes, and local jurisdictions where the building is located would also be permitted. Additionally, flags for public safety workers and flags commemorating national observances like 9/11 would be allowed.

The practical impact would be fairly limited because of all these exceptions. Most federal buildings already display primarily the American flag anyway. The main change would likely affect a small number of situations where other flags are currently displayed in public areas of federal buildings. For most Americans, this wouldn't directly change their daily lives, though it could affect how federal buildings look and what symbols are visible to visitors. The bill essentially codifies a preference for displaying only the American flag in federal spaces while carving out numerous exceptions for flags considered important to national identity, military service, or local representation.
