# What the Kangaroo Protection Act of 2025 Actually Does

This bill makes it illegal to import, sell, or trade kangaroo meat and kangaroo products in the United States for commercial purposes. Specifically, it targets four species of kangaroos and wallaroos found in Australia: the western grey kangaroo, eastern grey kangaroo, common wallaroo, and red kangaroo. If you're caught knowingly breaking this law, you could face up to a year in prison, a fine of up to $10,000, or both. Each separate violation counts as its own offense, so someone selling multiple kangaroo products could face multiple charges.

The ban covers the whole commercial supply chain—importing kangaroos into the country, possessing them with intent to sell, selling them directly, manufacturing products from them, advertising them, transporting them across state lines, or distributing them. This means kangaroo meat, leather goods, and any other products made from these animals would be prohibited from commercial sale. The law takes effect 180 days after it's passed, giving businesses time to adjust before enforcement begins.

For most Americans, this won't have much practical impact since kangaroo products aren't widely available in typical U.S. stores. However, specialty meat shops, restaurants serving exotic game, or online retailers that currently sell kangaroo meat would need to stop. The bill also won't affect people who already own kangaroo products—it only targets new commercial activity going forward. The Secretary of Commerce will work with other government agencies to create the specific rules for how this ban will be enforced.
